Newcastle United might have to smash their transfer record to sign Josko Gvardiol this summer.
The Magpies are reportedly in the market for a new centre-back, with the Daily Mail claiming that Gvardiol could be a target.
The 20-year-old defender is one of the brightest young prospects in the game today, and is having a fantastic debut season with RB Leipzig. He’s even been likened to Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk.
That’s why he would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle, as they look to build towards the future.

Of course, a deal would be extremely difficult given the Magpies’ current position compared to Leipzig’s. They’re on course to qualify for the Champions League once again – the place Newcastle’s owners are dreaming of.
Even if Gvardiol could be convinced to move to St James’ Park, the potential finances could make any deal impossible.
Josko Gvardiol could reportedly cost in excess of £50million
Tottenham Hotspur are another club reportedly keen on signing Gvardiol. They could have the luxury of offering Champions League football, with Antonio Conte’s side launching a late assault on the top four.
The Athletic report that the Croatian is one of Spurs’ top targets this summer. However, they add that he could cost them a club record fee.

That is huge money. Tottenham’s current record signing stands at £55million for Tanguy Ndombele.
That means Newcastle would also possibly have to smash their transfer record to land Gvardiol. While the Magpies do suddenly have incredible wealth, it has been reported that spending might be limited this summer.
Therefore, it feels incredibly unlikely that they’ll splash out more than £50million for a defender – especially when it’s claimed that most of the budget could go on a striker.
Gvardiol is an incredible talent who would be more than welcome at St James’ Park. However, his asking price might make this deal impossible.
