Newcastle United’s search for a striker could bring them back to Brentford’s Ivan Toney.
The Magpies were first linked with the forward back in April when it was suggested that Eddie Howe could target him as an alternative to Darwin Nunez.
Since then there’s been talk of a huge asking price from Brentford which appeared to put Newcastle off. ‘More than £50million‘ was claimed, which is an obscene amount of money.
But as Newcastle struggle to land a striker, the Toney rumours have resurfaced. i News recently claimed that Brentford have now lowered their asking price. They now reportedly want £40million for the 26-year-old.

That’s a lot more than what Newcastle sold him for in 2018. Peterborough reportedly paid just £650,000 for his services.
Re-signing him for more than 60 times that amount would be somewhat embarrassing, but Newcastle are getting desperate for attacking reinforcements.
Romano provides update on Newcastle possibly signing Toney
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now weighed in on the subject, and provided some addition information.
“Newcastle have had contacts in recent weeks but there is still no advanced negotiation,” he wrote for Caught Offside.
“Brentford want at least £40-45m to sell Toney and the situation may evolve in the coming weeks.”

Romano’s valuation somewhat coincides with what i News claimed earlier this week.
Talk of Newcastle making contact about a move is certainly new, and highlights the Magpies’ desire to look at other targets.
Alexander Isak was previously linked but is too expensive, Hugo Ekitike has gone to PSG, and Armando Broja could be off to West Ham. Meanwhile, Newcastle still need a striker.
This has led to Dan Ashworth asking about Brentford’s main man, and he now knows how much he will cost.
£40million is a huge amount of money. It’s the same fee that Joelinton cost three years ago. However, it is within our price range. The Telegraph have claimed that Newcastle have £50million left to spend this summer.

A deal for Toney would fit into our budget, but it would also make it difficult to land a winger as well. This is where things become tricky for Newcastle.
We need to fill two positions before the transfer window closes, both of which are very important, but for different reasons. We need a better backup for Callum Wilson in case he gets injured again. But we need a winger who can be a starter for Howe.
So which should take priority? A £40million move for Toney would suggest it is the former. Now we wait to see if the situation does ‘evolve in the coming weeks’ as Romano says.
