Newcastle transfer news: Toon interested in Yann Sommer

Newcastle United’s pursuit of a goalkeeper has now pointed them towards Yann Sommer.

For a long time it looked like Dean Henderson was destined to join the Magpies. There were even reports that a deal was close after talks in the North East.

However, the word now is that the Man United man will not be heading to St James’ Park. 90min recently reported that new Sporting Director Dan Ashworth has ‘put the brakes’ on signing Henderson. They state that Newcastle are now looking at other options.

Goalkeeper doesn’t appear to be a priority position for the Magpies this summer, despite Eddie Howe’s desire to add more depth in between the sticks.

Other areas of the squad are certainly more pressing, but that hasn’t stopped more keepers being linked with joining the club.

Newcastle now interested in Fabian Schar’s international teammate Yann Sommer

According to TalkSPORT, the Magpies are potentially interested in signing Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach.

He’s going into the final year of his contract with the Bundesliga club, meaning he could be moved on this summer. The report adds that Sommer isn’t keen on extending his current deal.

This could be good news for Newcastle, as they eye a new goalkeeper to compete with Martin Dubravka.

The 33-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant 2022, but is relatively unchallenged by Karl Darlow. Meanwhile, Freddie Woodman has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park.

Sommer would certainly be a top quality addition. He’s been one of Europe’s most impressive goalkeepers for a long time. A battle between the Swiss stopper and Newcastle’s current number one would be very interesting.

One current Newcastle player can certainly attest to Sommer’s sensational ability – Fabian Schar. The pair are regulars for Switzerland, and played important roles in guiding their nation to the Euro 2020 quarter finals. They have also played together at club level with Basel.

Schar has improved massively since the arrival of Howe, so much so that he has earned a new contract. He seems to be a guaranteed starter now, with Newcastle eyeing a left-sided centre-back to play alongside him.

And now he could be joined in Howe’s starting XI by Sommer next season. But would he be a good signing?

He’s certainly a wonderful goalkeeper. The only question mark is his age. Sommer is 33 just like Dubravka, meaning he would hardly be a long-term replacement. That was the beauty in a potential deal for 25-year-old Dean Henderson.
