Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Sofiane Diop this summer.

That’s according to French outlet Media Foot, who claim the Magpies have held talks with the Monaco ace’s representatives about a possible move.

Newcastle have tapped into the French market a lot since the change of ownership, signing Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman from Lyon and Lille respectively. Now Diop appears to be on the Toon’s radar.

The report adds that Diop is ‘on the way out’ of the Ligue 1 club, and that he also has interest from Marseille.

Whether or not Newcastle make a move remains to be seen, as Media Foot state, but Toon officials are aware of how much Monaco want for him, and what kind of wages he would demand.

Newcastle hold talks with versatile forward

If Newcastle do decide to sign Diop, they will be getting a very versatile player. The 22-year-old can play in a variety of positions, which might be what makes him so appealing.

The Frenchman is right-footed, but predominantly plays on the left wing. However, he can also play on the opposite flank or through the middle.

He made 45 appearances in all competitions for Monaco last season, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists. He was more proficient than any Newcastle player, that’s for sure.

Diop appears to be decent in front of goal, and strikes you as the kind of player Toon fans would love. In fact, he plays a bit like a former cult hero at St James’ Park.

Sofiane Diop plays like Hatem Ben Arfa

The France Under-21 international is incredibly skilful. He’s a wonderful dribbler. And it’s hard not to draw comparisons between him and Hatem Ben Arfa. He was adored on Tyneside, and is still a favourite of many Toon fans.

Ben Arfa was a magician, and Diop plays in a similar style. He has incredible balance in possession, shifting the ball from right to left to get past opponents.

Whether or not his talents would translate to the Premier League remains to be seen. Depending on the fee, he could be an intriguing option for Newcastle, and hopefully a cheaper alternative to the other names we’ve been linked with. Moussa Diaby was a target, but he is way too expensive.

The Magpies have reportedly held talks with Diop’s agent, and now we wait to see if an official bid is launched.
