The summer transfer window is going to be very interesting for Newcastle United fans.

It will be the first summer in a long time that the Toon Army won’t be watching on in fear. The club has ambition now, and could make a real splash when the transfer window swings open.

With Premier League survival looking likely, Newcastle will be moving into phase two of the ambitious new project.

Phase one was all about avoiding relegation, and it looks like we will do that.

This summer will be about improving the squad in a way that we can climb the table. Fans will be happy to see ambition, but it’s unknown internally what the club want to achieve next season. Top half? European push? Who knows.

Our intentions may become clearer when new faces arrive.

Report states Newcastle want quality not quantity this summer

According to The i, Newcastle want to improve three positions this summer. They reportedly want a striker, a midfielder and a centre-back.

The report adds that the Magpies will target ‘quality over numbers’. That’s a good plan, as our squad is already bloated. Ciaran Clark, Jamal Lewis and Isaac Hayden were axed from the 25-man Premier League squad.

Interestingly, there is no mention of a new goalkeeper being targeted. That seems strange considering the plethora of stoppers who’ve been linked in recent weeks.

A striker is a must for Newcastle, especially given Callum Wilson’s fitness woes. Chris Wood has done well in his absence, but hasn’t scored enough goals.

It’s no surprise to see a centre-back being targeted too, given the fact we only signed one in January. It was reported that Eddie Howe wanted two central defenders in the winter window.

Midfield is an interesting one, as it’s quite vague. Do they want a defensive midfielder? An attacking midfielder? A wide midfielder? I suppose we will find out in the summer.
