Newcastle transfer news: Toon could move for Jean-Clair Todibo

Newcastle United could reportedly sign another centre-back this summer in Jean-Clair Todibo.

That’s according to Foot Mercato, who claim the Magpies are interested in the OGC Nice defender. They state that Newcastle appreciate Todibo, and have not ruled out a move to sign him before the transfer window closes.

Manchester United are also linked, while Foot Mercato report that Napoli and Sevilla have already had bids turned down.

The 22-year-old has had an interesting career so far, but finally looks settled at Nice. However, he is already being linked with a move away just 12 months after joining them permanently.

Todibo would cost Newcastle around £17million

Todibo joined Nice on loan in February 2021, and then made the move from Barcelona permanent that summer. He cost an initial £7million, but the deal included add-ons.

Barca will also receive part of the transfer fee if Nice decide to sell. Todibo’s time at the Nou Camp was a bit of a disaster after being signed as a star of the future.

He made just four La Liga appearances, and spent time out on loan at Schalke, Benfica and then Nice.

Now he’s back in France and playing regularly alongside other Toon target Amine Gouiri, and is reportedly valued at more than £17million.

Move to St James’ Park for Todibo feels unlikely

While he is a highly rated defender, a move to St James’ Park surely isn’t on the cards.

Newcastle have already signed Sven Botman this summer, and another centre-back isn’t a priority right now. We need a striker and a winger instead, which is why the aforementioned Gouiri is being linked.

He’s been identified as an alternative to Hugo Ekitike, as Howe searches for attacking reinforcements ahead of the new season.

The man dubbed the ‘new Karim Benzema‘ would be an exciting addition. In contrast, Todibo would be a waste of money.

With the Magpies trying to be savvy with their transfer budget, spending almost £20million on another centre-back wouldn’t be wise when the team desperately needs more goals.

There’s surely next to no chance of Todibo joining the Magpies, and the fact he’s even linked with a move is odd.
