Newcastle transfer news: Toon could move for Phillips if Burn move fails

Newcastle United are still desperate to sign a centre-back, but who that is remains to be seen.

Eddie Howe reportedly wants someone with Premier League experience, with the Magpies making a bid for Brighton’s Dan Burn earlier in the week.

However, the Athletic have claimed that the offer was rejected by the Seagulls.

Newcastle could move again for the boyhood Toon fan, but they do have other options.

In a new report by the Athletic, they state that Newcastle could make a move for Liverpool defender Nat Phillips next if Brighton refuse to do business over Burn. It all depends on the South Coast side and whether or not they want to sell the 29-year-old.

Nat Phillips might be better business for Newcastle

With Newcastle eyeing Premier League experience, options are somewhat limited. A deal for Burn will be difficult as he’s featured a lot for Graham Potter’s side this season.

In contrast, Phillips can barely get a kick at Anfield. The 24-year-old hasn’t featured since a Champions League clash with AC Milan where he dominated Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

It’s been reported all month that he could leave Liverpool, but he’s yet to secure a move away.

And if Newcastle do fail to sign Burn, it could be a blessing in disguise if it forces them to turn their attentions to Phillips.

In fairness to Burn, he wouldn’t be a bad signing. As a local lad he knows the club, and he does have the experience Howe craves. He can also play at left-back, which is an added bonus – especially if we don’t sign one this month.

Both seem likely to be available for a similar price – around £15million.

But there is more longevity in Phillips. He’s five years younger than the Brighton man. If he performs well and develops, he could have a lengthy career at St James’ Park.

In contrast, Burn would feel more of a stopgap.

While both would be decent options as our desperation increases, Phillips might represent better business.
