Newcastle United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Mauro Icardi this summer.

That’s according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who states that the striker has also been offered to Manchester United and Arsenal.

Paris Saint-Germain want rid of the Argentinian forward, who is not a regular for the Ligue 1 champions. They have had a busy summer, with a new manager arriving and Hugo Ekitike signing from Reims.

The French side beat Newcastle to the youngster, and are now trying to send Icardi to fill the Ekitike shaped hole at St James’ Park.

What Romano has said about Icardi and Newcastle

Transfer expert Romano is the man who has claimed that Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign the ‘world class‘ striker from PSG.

“I’ve written about Mauro Icardi being offered to Manchester United, and also Arsenal earlier in the summer, though they preferred to sign Gabriel Jesus,” he told Caught Offside.

“I can now reveal that the Argentine also been offered to Newcastle.

“Icardi’s situation is really difficult. PSG want to find a solution soon, but the player does not intend to accept unwanted destinations.

“He has been offered to Man United and Newcastle who have not made any kind of proposal for Icardi so far.”

Icardi linked with Magpies last year

Like so many players, this isn’t the first time Icardi has been linked with Newcastle. He was reportedly a target shortly after the takeover went through, back when crazy rumours were the norm on Tyneside.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand commented on the speculation of a possible move to Newcastle for Icardi, and he wasn’t convinced.

He stated that moving to the North East could be a ‘hard sell‘ to Icardi, who would be swapping the bright lights of Paris for the streets of Newcastle.

While Ferdinand does make a valid point, that is not the only reason why Icardi will likely never grace the St James’ Park turf.

No chance Newcastle will say yes to PSG’s offer

PSG can offer Icardi to Newcastle all they want, but they are barking up the wrong tree.

Eddie Howe needs another striker, but there’s simply no way we will sign someone like Icardi. There are so many reasons why a deal like this isn’t going to happen.

First things first, wages. Icardi will be on mega money at PSG, and the 29-year-old will want the same at St James’ Park. That’s not going to happen, with Newcastle being careful not to smash their wage structure.

Secondly, Howe doesn’t want a starting striker. Instead, he wants someone young who can compete with and learn from Wilson. We effectively need a backup just in case our number nine suffers a long-term injury.

Icardi is not that type of player. Ekitike is, and that’s why Newcastle wanted him. But instead he’s at PSG now.

Thirdly, and most importantly, Icardi is not the kind of character we want on Tyneside. Controversy follows him wherever he goes. That’s not what Newcastle need.

Since the change of ownership, the club have made a point of signing the right characters. We haven’t brought in big time players with massive egos and reputations. So why change that now?

Icardi may have been offered to Newcastle and he is certainly a good player, but there is no chance we will take him off of PSG’s hands.
