Reported Newcastle United target Niklas Sule looks set to leave Bayern Munich in 2022.

The defender has been linked with a move to St James’ Park since the Saudi-backed takeover went through in October.

It has been claimed in Germany that he is interested in the new project at Newcastle, while local outlet Newcastle World state that talks have taken place between the Magpies and Sule’s representatives.

But is a deal going to be possible, and if so, when? Sule’s contract situation certainly complicates things.

Niklas Sule’s Bayern contract expires next summer

The 26-year-old’s current deal at the Allianz Arena runs out in the summer of 2022. When January 1st hits, he can sign a pre-contract with other clubs. He could also be available for a cut price fee, if Bayern are keen to get some money for him.

Sule is in a commanding position – he holds all the cards.

And according to Sky Germany, it seems certain that he is going to leave the Bundesliga champions. They report that his exit is ‘as good as sealed’. Sky Germany add that it will be ‘difficult or even impossible’ for Sule to sign a new contract with Bayern.

Good news for Newcastle?

Sule’s unwillingness to stay at Bayern could help Newcastle in their pursuit. But a deal will still be incredibly difficult.

The Germany international is a big name in European football, while the PIF/Toon project is still in its infancy.

Convincing high profile players will be tricky. But perhaps it won’t be as hard if a deal for Sule waits until the summer. By then we’ll know whether or not we’ve survived in the Premier League.

And with Sule possibly becoming a free agent then, it will be down to which club can offer him the best package. And Newcastle’s new financial position mean they should be able to give Sule a brilliant offer.

Of course, Newcastle need centre-backs now. They need to move in January to improve their defence.

That might mean we move for Sule sooner and pay a fee to get him. It just depends on how much the hierarchy want to bring him to St James’ Park.
