Newcastle transfer news: Maxwel Cornet wants European football

If Newcastle United decide to make a move for Maxwel Cornet, convincing him to join might not be easy.

It was reported earlier in the summer that the Magpies had asked Burnley about the forward, following their relegation to the Championship.

Eddie Howe has already raided his former club once this summer, and there have been suggestions that he might do it again.

Newcastle are looking to sign a winger, and have been linked with both Dwight McNeil and Cornet. The latter would be a more exciting addition given how he played last season.

While Burnley were largely rotten, Cornet excelled. The 25-year-old scored nine goals for the Clarets, which is more than any Toon player managed last season. He also provided one assist.

That’s why he could be a good option for Newcastle, and we’ve even been offered the chance to sign him. According to the Chronicle, Cornet has been offered to the Magpies. He’s available for £17.5million due to a relegation release clause.

However, activating it doesn’t necessarily mean he will move to St James’ Park.

It was reported last month that Cornet was waiting for a big enough team to bid for him, but it was unclear how big was ‘big enough’. Now the Athletic have provided some more information.

That could scupper any Toon attempt to sign the winger. While we finished last season strongly, we didn’t qualify for Europe – unsurprisingly.

But while we aren’t there yet, that is the goal for the near future. The new owners want to take Newcastle into Europe, although it is easier said than done.

We are currently looking for players to help us bridge the gap to the top half of the table, and Cornet would certainly be a good addition. However, he clearly isn’t first choice if a bid hasn’t followed after he was offered to us.

But our stance might change the more time passes without attacking reinforcements. If that does happen, we will have to convince Cornet that he can achieve his European dream here, albeit not immediately.
