Newcastle United target Maxwel Cornet is waiting to make a move away from Burnley this summer.
The 25-year-old suffered relegation last season, with the Clarets finishing 18th in the Premier League.
Interestingly, it was Newcastle who condemned Burnley to relegation, beating them 2-1 on the final day at Turf Moor.
Cornet scored that afternoon for Burnley, but it wasn’t enough to preserve their Premier League status.
The Magpies have already signed one player from Burnley this summer, landing Nick Pope for £10million. However, he might not be the last addition.
Newcastle have asked about Maxwel Cornet
Newcastle have been linked with a move for Cornet as well. 90min recently reported that the Magpies have asked about possibly signing the forward this summer.
They add that Eddie Howe is a fan of Cornet. He also admires 22-year-old winger Dwight McNeil.
A bid for Cornet would certainly be exciting, and he has a direct route out of Turf Moor. When he joined the Clarets last summer, his contract included a £17.5million relegation release clause.
However, no one has activated it yet.
Forward is waiting for the right club to leave Burnley
According to Give Me Sport, Cornet is waiting for a club that is big enough to try and sign him.
But would that include Newcastle? You would like to think so.
We’re certainly a bigger club than Burnley, and Cornet will have seen firsthand the beast we are on the brink of becoming.
He would surely be open to a move to St James’ Park. The bigger question is whether or not he’s ideal for Newcastle.
Cornet enjoyed a brilliant debut season in the Premier League. He scored nine times in 26 appearances, which is a decent tally. It’s a better tally than any Toon player manged by the end of the 2021/22 campaign.
The Ivory Coast international is predominantly a left winger, but can also play through the middle. However, he doesn’t fully fit the bill of what Newcastle need.
We need a winger, but the left side belongs to Allan Saint-Maximin. We need a right-sided specialist.
And when it comes to up front, we are probably looking for someone who can play as a lone striker. That’s not something Cornet did for Burnley, often playing as part of a front two.
With that in mind, Cornet could be someone Newcastle revisit later in the window if they are struggling to land any of their attacking targets.
But whether or not he thinks Newcastle are big enough remains to be seen.
