There is still hope that Newcastle United can sign Sven Botman this summer.
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim the Magpies are still in the mix to land the Dutch defender.
Newcastle are now turning their attentions to next season following the conclusion of the 2021/22 Premier League season. Despite being in a ropey position in January, we ended up surviving with ease.
A huge factor in our survival mission was the winter investment, with five new faces arriving at the club. However, one player who didn’t arrive is Botman.
Newcastle really wanted to sign Sven Botman in January
The 22-year-old was one of Eddie Howe’s main targets in January, but the club simply couldn’t agree a fee with Lille. They were desperate to keep hold of one of their star players, as they prepared for the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Newcastle made some big offers for the centre-back, who was reportedly keen on a move to St James’ Park. The Magpies first offered £30million to land Botman, then came back in with a £42million offer towards the end of the window.
But Lille’s asking price was £46million, meaning he remained in France for the rest of the season.
Toon co-owner Amanda Staveley commented on the negotiations after the window closed. She told the Athletic in February: “Some desperately wanted to come to us, like Sven (Botman), who still does very much and has talked very openly about that.”
So is Botman still desperate to move to Newcastle?
Newcastle have fresh Botman hope despite AC Milan rumours
The Daily Mail claim that Newcastle are in the hunt to sign Botman for a second transfer window in a row. That’s despite interest from Serie A champions AC Milan.
It has even been reported that the Italian side have agreed a deal with Botman, but those claims might be premature.
The report adds that Newcastle ‘have been given encouragement’ that they can sign the Netherlands international.
While our defence has improved since Howe arrived, another new centre-back would certainly be welcome. And Botman would definitely be a brilliant addition.
He’s proven himself in Ligue 1 and in the Champions League, and is at an age where he could be Newcastle’s main centre-back for the next decade.
We’re in a much better position compared to January. Hopefully Botman has seen the club grow and grow, and can be convinced to head to England rather than Italy.
