According to the Athletic, Newcastle United have increased their offer for Sven Botman.

The Magpies tried and failed to secure the defender earlier in the window, with Lille reportedly rejecting their £30million offer.

There was talk that the Magpies would move on to other targets, with reports then emerging that we had bid for Sevilla’s Diego Carlos. The Athletic state that the La Liga side rejected our offer for the Brazilian.

Newcastle seem desperate to secure a centre-back sooner rather than later, and it is clear that Botman is their number one target. It has been reported that they want a centre-back before the Watford game on January 15th.

Going all in on Sven Botman is the right thing to do for Newcastle

Both Botman and Carlos are great centre-backs, but their ages are big factors. Botman has his best years ahead of him at 21-years-old, while Carlos has a lot more experience at 28, and turns 29 in March.

But neither have that vital Premier League experience that Eddie Howe craves. And that’s why we should go for the younger option.

Newcastle must think long-term as well as short-term this month, which is why Amanda Staveley and co are right to pursue Botman ahead of Carlos.

Botman could be Newcastle’s main centre-back for the next 10 years. He could become a part of the spine of the new Newcastle United.

In contrast, Carlos is in his peak years now. While he wouldn’t be a short-term solution by any stretch of the imagination, he doesn’t have the longevity of Botman.

Considering they both seem to be available for similar fees, Newcastle need to continue going all out to secure Botman’s signature.
