Newcastle United are likely to go big in the summer transfer window and the Magpies have been linked with a move for Giovanni Simeone.

With Callum Wilson seemingly unable to stay fit for a full season and Chris Wood a completely different profile of striker, PIF and Eddie Howe could look to bolster their striking options in the summer market.

Wood has only played six games for the Toon Army, but the towering New Zealander is yet to score for his new club after being signed from relegation rivals Burnley.

For all of the physical qualities Wood brings, having a prolific striker who can stay fit and score goals will be crucial in Newcastle embarking on the next phase of the ambitious project.

Giovanni Simeone on Newcastle’s radar

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Verona’s Simeone, who has dazzled in Serie A this season, is a player that is very much on Newcastle’s radar.

Only Dusan Vlahovic (17) and Ciro Immobile (19) have scored more goals than Simeone (15) in Serie A this season.

From 24 matches for Verona this campaign, Simeone has 15 goals and four assists to his name.

Despite being at Verona for less than a year after signing from Cagliari for £10million, the son of Diego Simeone has hinted he is already considering a fresh move according to reports from Italy.

However, the Magpies are expected to face competition from Giovanni’s dad’s side Atletico Madrid, with Marseille also interested.

At the age of 26, a move to the Premier League after six seasons in the Italian top-flight could appeal to the Argentinian international who has been capped five times for his country.

During his time in Italy, Simeone has scored 65 goals and made 18 assists from 204 Serie A matches.

Simeone ended an eight-game goal drought in emphatic style at the weekend by scoring a hat-trick in a 3-1 win against Venezia.

The man who wears shirt number 99 is in illustrious company this season, as he and Robert Lewandowski are the only players to have scored more than one hat-trick in Europe’s top five leagues this season (WhoScored).

Both Wood and Wilson could find themselves anxiously looking over their shoulders if PIF ramp up their reported interest in Giovanni Simeone.
