Newcastle United reportedly want to sign Adria Pedrosa this summer according to reports in Spain.
Mundo Deportivo claim that the Magpies are one of two Premier League clubs interested in the Espanyol left-back. The other is Brighton.
They report that the La Liga side want to keep Pedrosa at the club, and are going to try and get him to sign a new contract. However, if he does leave, he could cost as little as £6.75million.
That’s a pretty small fee nowadays, but alleged interest in the 24-year-old from Newcastle makes no sense.
Newcastle don’t need a left-back amid Adria Pedrosa interest
Eddie Howe has already added three players to his squad this summer, but is yet to make any attacking additions.
That’s what we need the most, so looking at a left-back is strange. It’s even stranger after we signed Matt Targett permanently, which was a sensible decision.
He will be the club’s first choice left-back, but we do have various other options. Paul Dummett and Jamal Lewis will fight for the honour of being reserve left-back, while Matt Ritchie and Javi Manquillo can also do a job out there.
Therefore, talk of Newcastle wanting to sign another left-back in Pedrosa is farcical.
In contrast, Brighton really do need a left-back. They have sold Marc Cucurella to Chelsea for big money and will need to replace him.
They’ve certainly got money to play with, with the Blues paying £62million for the Spaniard.
The only possible explanation for Newcastle being interested in Pedrosa is the Dan Ashworth factor. Perhaps he was on a list of Brighton targets before he left the Amex and took on the role of Toon Sporting Director.
Regardless, this is a rumour to file under the ‘not going to happen’ category.
Newcastle will make more signings this summer, but it would be massively surprising if one of them is another left-sided defender.
