Newcastle tried to sign Jack Harrison this summer, and Leeds will reportedly offer him a new contract to fend off interest from the Magpies.

That’s according to the Northern Echo, who state that Jesse Marsch’s side want to reach an agreement with the 25-year-old before the end of 2022.

Harrison was a major target in the summer for the Magpies. Eddie Howe was very keen to bring him to St James’ Park.

Newcastle made multiple offers for the former MLS star, with the most recent reportedly worth more than £25million. However, Leeds said no and decided to keep the talented winger.

It was a blow for Newcastle, who have proven that they could do with a player like Harrison right now.

When the January transfer window comes around, Howe will be looking for a wide player once again. And that’s why Leeds are looking to take action now.

Leeds fear Newcastle as they plan new contract for Jack Harrison

According to the Northern Echo, Harrison will feature prominently on Newcastle’s list of January targets. The club will reportedly prioritise signing an attacking midfielder or a winger.

That makes sense given their failure to land one in the summer. And the owners have already proven they are prepared to revisit former targets. That’s what led to Sven Botman signing this summer.

Therefore, it makes sense that Leeds try and extend Harrison’s deal and preserve his value. As it stands, his current deal expires in the summer of 2024. That means they are vulnerable to losing the wide midfielder for nothing in less than two years.

And that would be a disaster given how talented Harrison is. He’s enjoyed a decent start to the new Premier League season, scoring once and providing three assists.

One assist came against Chelsea, and it was described as ‘absolutely magnificent‘ by pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

That kind of creativity is what is missing at St James’ Park right now. Newcastle drew 1-1 with Bournemouth on Saturday, and severely lacked quality out wide.

The owners will know that more reinforcements are required in January, and Harrison would be an excellent addition. Leeds know that too, which is why they plan to do everything they can to keep him at Elland Road.
