Newcastle United’s chances of signing Kalvin Phillips could increase if Leeds suffer relegation to the Championship.

Jesse Marsch’s side are currently 17th in the table, and face a real battle to avoid the drop. After last weekend’s results, a lot of people have Leeds as favourites to go down.

And if that does happen, there could be a mass exodus at Elland Road. The Daily Mail report that some of their star players have release clauses that will be activated if they suffer relegation.

One of those players is Phillips, who has been linked with a move to St James’ Park this summer.

The Daily Mail reported in March that Newcastle are looking to sign a midfielder when the transfer window opens, with Phillips on their list of targets.

Newcastle can get Kalvin Phillips for around £30m if Leeds go down

It’s previously been reported that Phillips could be available for around £60million. However, relegation would see his asking price slashed.

The Daily Mail claim that the 26-year-old will cost around £30million if Leeds go down. The report adds that Raphinha and Patrick Bamford will also be available for similar fees.

Newcastle have also been linked with Raphinha, but he seems more likely to join Barcelona – whether Leeds stay up or not.

But Phillips is the Leeds player Newcastle should be targeting, especially if his asking price is halved. The England international could be the long-term replacement for Jonjo Shelvey, who has served Newcastle well since his 2016 arrival. Phillips is four years younger, and can play a similar role with his ability to spread the play.

At £60million, it feels incredibly unlikely that the Magpies would make a move for Phillips. But £30million is much more reasonable – in fact, it’s a bit of a bargain for a player who took Euro 2020 by storm last year.

If the Magpies do decide to make a move for Phillips, they could face serious competition. It’s been reported that Manchester United want to sign the midfielder. And there will surely be even more clubs chasing his signature if Leeds go down.
