Joao Pedro is reportedly interested in joining Newcastle United this summer.
That’s according to the Chronicle, who believe that the 20-year-old is open to a move to the North East.
The Magpies’ opening bid was rejected on Monday, with Dan Ashworth offering £23million in total. The bid was £20million up front with another £3million in potential add-ons.
It was turned down by Watford, who want at least £30million for the Brazilian forward.
Newcastle are now considering whether or not to make a second bid. And they should be encouraged by the player’s stance on a potential transfer to Tyneside.
Joao Pedro keen on Newcastle move
The Chronicle add that while Pedro would be interested, he isn’t the type of character who will push for a transfer. That’s probably good and bad for us.
It’s good as it suggests that he is the right type of character, which is a big factor in who Eddie Howe wants in his team. However, it’s bad as it means Watford won’t be in a position where they have an unhappy player who is desperate to leave.
Regardless of Pedro’s stance, it will mean nothing if Newcastle don’t increase their offer. Ashworth needs to decide how much he is willing to pay to bring the youngster to St James’ Park.
£30million is a lot of money for someone so young. He’s only ever scored three goals in the Premier League. But the Toon recruitment team obviously see something in him, and he’s a player who arrived at Watford with a lot of potential.
He hasn’t reached it yet, but that’s not a problem given his age. Pedro has been getting better and better in a yellow shirt, which is why Watford are desperate to keep him.
Manager Rob Edwards is certainly a fan, and called him ‘incredible‘ earlier in the season.
It feels like Newcastle aren’t a million miles away from a transfer breakthrough. We have both Pedro and Callum Hudson-Odoi who are interested in moves to the North East. That’s half the battle won.
Ashworth and co now need to do their best to get these deals done. Sign two players like Pedro and Hudson-Odoi and supporters will be feeling even more confident about the current campaign.
Pedro is interested in joining Newcastle – now it’s up to us to show Watford the money.
