Ivan Fresneda will now be staying at Real Valladolid for the rest of the season after being linked with a move to Newcastle United.
That is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who states that the Spaniard is now expected to remain where he is despite being linked with a move away for the entire January transfer window.
The Magpies have been heavily linked with signing the 18-year-old, and it was even claimed that a deal was close to being agreed.
However, then it emerged that Newcastle were no longer leading the chase for the right-back. The Athletic recently claimed that Fresneda would choose between Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, with both sides agreeing a £13million deal.
It appeared as if Dan Ashworth was going to miss out on the chance to sign the teenager, who had been identified as someone who could grow at St James’ Park and learn from Trippier.
But now Fresneda’s future is being put on hold, with Romano stating that he will instead move clubs during the summer transfer window.
That could allow Newcastle to re-enter the race, but perhaps they won’t need to given what happened on Sunday afternoon.
Newcastle may no longer need Ivan Fresneda
Fresneda had been identified as a right-back option by Newcastle. Ashworth has been trying to sign additional backup for Kieran Trippier, as well as someone who can eventually replace him.
It looked like Fresneda was going to get that job, but now it seems that Newcastle have found someone else.
Reports emerged on Sunday stating that the Magpies had agreed a £3million fee with West Ham to sign Harrison Ashby, who missed out on a move to St James’ Park during the summer.

Now Newcastle are going to get their man, with the 21-year-old set for a medical ahead of his move to Tyneside.
Once Ashby signs on the dotted line, there should be no need for Newcastle to reignite their interest in Fresneda. The role he was going to take will be filled, and Toon officials will hope that Ashby has the potential to take Trippier’s place in years to come.
That honour could have gone to Fresneda, but he is staying put this month ahead of a big move in the summer. But Newcastle want someone now, with Ashby on course to become the Magpies’ newest signing.
