Newcastle transfer news: Middlesbrough want Dwight Gayle

Dwight Gayle could soon follow Isaac Hayden in leaving Newcastle United amid reports Middlesbrough want him.

The latter has joined Norwich on a season-long loan deal, with the view to a permanent transfer.

Hayden will be back in the Championship for the first time since 2017, and he could come up a former teammate in Gayle.

That’s because the Daily Mail claim that the striker is in talks to head to the Riverside Stadium.

Leaving Newcastle feels inevitable for Dwight Gayle

Having barely played over the past couple of seasons, it feels inevitable that Gayle will leave Newcastle this summer.

Multiple members of Eddie Howe’s squad will be moved on, as the Toon boss looks to evolve his squad for the new Premier League season.

A new striker is being heavily linked, while a deal for teenage sensation Hugo Ekitike is reportedly close. That will limit Gayle’s chances of first-team football even further.

The 32-year-old has rarely featured under Howe, making five appearances off the bench. He hasn’t scored a Premier League goal since December 2020. That was a headed winner against West Brom during the behind closed doors era.

Middlesbrough is a good option

While Gayle has often struggled in the top flight, he’s a machine in the Championship.

That’s where Newcastle were when he first arrived at St James’ Park in 2016. His 23 goals propelled the Magpies to the title, justifying the £10million investment.

He then returned to the Championship in 2018, going on loan to West Brom. He was excellent once again, scoring 24 times.

That’s why Middlesbrough fans should be very excited about a possible move for Gayle.

They missed out on the playoffs last season, but will fancy their chances of coming up next year under Chris Wilder.

However, they could do with adding a consistent goalscorer to their side. Their top scorer in 21/22 was Matt Crooks with 11.

That’s a tally Gayle is capable of bettering with ease. He knows how to score goals in the second tier and can be the difference at key moments. We witnessed that many times during the Rafa Benitez title-winning season.

If Gayle does join Boro then he’ll be reunited with Sammy Ameobi, who he shared a dressing room with at Newcastle.

A move to Middlesbrough looks like it could be best for all parties. It gets Gayle off of Newcastle’s books, while Boro get a proven goalscorer. On top of that, Gayle won’t have to relocate his family if he feels they are settled where they are.

This could be a win-win-win for everyone involved.
