Newcastle transfer news: Howe has concerns over Zapata and Depay

Newcastle United have been linked with signing Duvan Zapata this summer, but Eddie Howe has some concerns.

The forward was linked with the Magpies in January, as Howe looked to replace the injured Callum Wilson. Chris Wood arrived instead, but the Zapata links have continued heading into the new season.

It was recently reported by the Northern Echo that Newcastle plan to speak to Atalanta about Zapata. He could be a lot cheaper than in January, available for £20million as opposed to £35million.

The Magpies are looking to sign a new striker, but there are fears that Zapata might not be the right fit.

Newcastle’s Zapata stance

According to 90min, Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign Zapata this summer. However, the club aren’t sure.

The report adds that Howe is unsure whether or not he suits the system he’s trying to use at St James’ Park.

It proves there’s been a change of stance since January. Back then, Newcastle needed to do whatever they could to survive. However, now our transfer approach is a bit more measured.

Zapata doesn’t strike you as a player Newcastle would want. His age is certainly an issue, with the Colombian currently 31-years-old. In contrast, the Magpies have been targeting much younger players who can grow at the club.

Signing Zapata would feel like a case of just getting a body in as opposed to someone who is suited the system.

And he’s not the only player Howe is unsure about signing.

Howe also has concerns over Depay

Newcastle have also been offered the chance to sign Memphis Depay, 90min claim. He’s being linked with a move away from Barcelona, having joined last year on a free from Lyon.

A move to St James’ Park would see him reunite with Bruno Guimaraes, who was a big fan of Depay.

In 2020, Bruno said: “He is a player that opponents do not like to face, he scares them. With us, he is very respected, he is our captain, a very important player. To be able to count on him, it’s truly great.”

While Bruno loves Depay, a transfer to the Toon surely won’t happen. 90min state that the 28-year-old Dutchman is another player who Howe fears isn’t suited to his system.

Another issue would be the money. He surely doesn’t fit into the wage structure we have right now. He’s also a very high profile name, which is what the Toon owners have tried to avoid.

Depay being offered to us feels like a case of financially scuppered Barcelona trying to exploit our newfound wealth. However, it won’t work.

Out of the two, Zapata feels much more likely than Depay, but even he would be a strange addition to Howe’s squad.
