The Northern Echo state that Kieran Trippier is one of Newcastle United’s main targets going into the January transfer window.
The England defender was first linked with the Magpies even before Eddie Howe was announced as the club’s new manager.
But the rumours about Trippier have continued, with reports stating that Howe wants the right-back at St James’ Park.
The Toon boss has rotated his right-sided defenders since arriving. He started with Jacob Murphy as wing-back, then Emil Krafth came in for the trip to Arsenal. In the past two games, it’s been Javi Manquillo on the right of defence.

Trippier would certainly be an improvement on our current options. But how much will it cost to bring him back to the Premier League?
Newcastle could make Trippier their second most expensive signing ever
Newcastle’s current transfer record is the £40million spent on Joelinton in 2019. That deal has been heavily criticised, even if the Brazilian is starting to improve in black and white.

A deal for Trippier wouldn’t eclipse that fee, but he could become the club’s second most expensive signing.
The Northern Echo report that Newcastle are willing to pay £25million for the 31-year-old. That would equal the fee spent on Joe Willock this summer – the final signing of the Mike Ashley era.
Getting Trippier would be quite a coup for the Magpies. He’s a big name who is playing in the Champions League. Will he really want to join a team in a Premier League relegation battle?

However, he is out of favour at Atletico Madrid. Trippier is currently injured, with Marcos Llorente thriving in his absence. With a World Cup on the horizon, Trippier won’t do his England ambitions any good sitting on the bench.
That could force him to consider a move away from the Wando Metropolitano. He would be a great addition for Howe, who signed Trippier for Burnley back in January 2012.
A high profile name, a decent defender and a set piece expert – Trippier ticks a lot of boxes for PIF and Newcastle.
