Newcastle United and Arsenal now know how much money Lyon want for Lucas Paqueta this summer.

The 24-year-old is being heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, with Newcastle fans dreaming of Bruno Guimaraes being reunited with his best friend at St James’ Park.

Arsenal are reportedly interested in Paqueta too. Reports in France state that Mikel Arteta’s side are pushing to sign the Brazil international.

Paqueta is a man in demand this summer, but any transfer will cost a lot of money.

Romano shares how much money Lyon want for Lucas Paqueta

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Paqueta’s future following news of interest from Arsenal.

“Lyon often end up selling their star players, but Paqueta won’t come cheap – his club would like at least €60-65million plus add-ons for the Brazilian,” he wrote for Caught Offside.

That translates to between £50million and £55million, which would make him Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever. It would also make him one of Arsenal’s most expensive acquisitions.

Romano adds that Paqueta would ‘love to play in the Premier League’.

Newcastle move still feels very unlikely

At the start of the summer, Newcastle were heavily linked with Paqueta. It sounded like another Brazilian could be on his way to St James’ Park. His best friend plays here, he visited the area, we were keen in January – it felt like a perfect storm.

The Times even claimed that he was a target for Eddie Howe, and that Newcastle were prepared to break their transfer record for him.

That’s exactly what it will take, but it doesn’t mean a move is on the horizon.

While the stars appear to be aligned, Newcastle’s priorities lie elsewhere. We don’t need an attacking midfielder – we need a striker and a winger.

We’re already struggling to fund moves for those two positions, so spending north of £50million on Paqueta would be very strange. In truth, talk of him joining the Magpies has only resurfaced because Arsenal are now seemingly keen.

As long as Newcastle need a striker and a winger, Paqueta isn’t coming to St James’ Park. However, if we can get two new signings in soon, perhaps talk of ‘Paqueta to Tyneside’ will return before the window closes.
