Newcastle transfer news: How Magpies reacted to Lloyd Kelly asking price

Ever since Eddie Howe’s arrival Newcastle have been linked with Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

He was a target heading into January, but a deal didn’t come to fruition. The Cherries didn’t want to sell one of their star players during their promotion push.

That was an understandable stance, meaning Newcastle looked elsewhere and brought in Dan Burn.

He’s been fantastic, but the Magpies still want to sign another centre-back this summer. And once again Kelly is a target.

The Express reported in March that Newcastle were planning a £12million bid for the 23-year-old. That sounded foolish at the time, as there’s no way that Bournemouth would consider selling at that price.

In fact, it appears their asking price is a lot more than Newcastle’s fanciful fee of £12million…

According to the Athletic, Newcastle have once again asked Bournemouth about signing their skipper. However, their answer wasn’t what Howe was looking for.

The Athletic claim that the Magpies were ‘staggered’ by Lloyd Kelly’s asking price. They feel the same about Manchester City’s valuation of Nathan Ake, who can apparently go for £50million.

It’s a blow for Howe, who is clearly a very big fan of Kelly. He was the manager who brought him to Dean Court in the first place.

The Toon boss described him as an ‘outstanding’ player with great potential back in June 2020.

Kelly will hope to reach that potential next season in the Premier League, but it will be in black and red stripes rather than black and white.

As soon as Bournemouth won promotion, a move to Newcastle for Kelly felt incredibly unlikely. That appears to be the case, with Scott Parker’s side slapping a staggering price tag on one of their best players.

Newcastle will have to look elsewhere for a centre-back, with speculation continuing over a move for Lille’s Sven Botman.
