Newcastle United appear to be stepping up their efforts to sign Goncalo Ramos from Benfica this summer.
That bid doesn’t appear to have gone in yet, and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the situation.
Romano on Ramos to Newcastle
Romano has tweeted about Newcastle’s interest in the Portuguese youngster, and has stated that he has shot up Dan Ashworth’s list of targets.
“Newcastle are preparing a proposal for Gonçalo Ramos as new top target,” he wrote.
“Discussions ongoing on player side and talks will continue with Benfica. Paris Saint-Germain have Ramos in their list since June but there’s still nothing agreed – Newcastle, on it too.”
Newcastle face competition from PSG
It’s interesting to see that Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in Ramos. We have already lost out to them this summer, which fans will be well aware of.
Hugo Ekitike looked certain to join Howe’s side, but the Frenchman’s move to Newcastle collapsed and he joined PSG instead. The Ligue 1 champions gazumped us and signed one of the highest rated young forwards in Europe today.
And now they want Ramos too. It doesn’t really add up. PSG have a wealth of talent in attack. A move for Ramos wouldn’t make sense, especially as it appears he will cost at least £25million.
But it’s a testament to his ability that PSG are interested. It suggests that Newcastle are looking to sign a player who has a really bright future in the game.
Newcastle know exactly what ‘top target’ Ramos can do
The Magpies saw first hand what he is capable of last month. Ramos played against Newcastle in a pre-season friendly, and scored Benfica’s opening goal in the 3-2 triumph. He outjumped Jamaal Lascelles from a corner, which isn’t a moment the Newcastle captain will look back on fondly.
Ramos has impressed in competitive action too, even if the new season is only young. He’s made three appearances in all competitions already, and has provided six goal contributions.
The Portugal Under-21 international scored a hat-trick in a Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland, then provided an assist in the return leg. He also set up two goals in the league against Arouca last weekend.
If he can take that form to Newcastle then he could prove to be a good signing. Romano believes he is now our top target, so we eagerly wait to see if a deal can be agreed.
