Newcastle transfer news: Magpies to bid for Benfica's Goncalo Ramos

Newcastle United are reportedly planning to make a bid for Goncalo Ramos soon.

That’s according to Portuguese football expert Pedro Sepulveda, who has told Sky Sports that a Toon bid for the Benfica striker is on its way.

Eddie Howe is still looking for a forward to support Callum Wilson, who started his season in fine style with a goal against Nottingham Forest.

However, there will always be a fear that another injury could strike, meaning Newcastle need to sign adequate backup.

So could Ramos provide that?

How much Newcastle are going to bid for Ramos

The 21-year-old was a regular for Benfica last season, but could now be on the move. Sepulveda states that manager Roger Schmidt could be willing to let Ramos leave for the right kind of fee.

It’s therefore up to Newcastle to make a big enough offer, and it sounds like Dan Ashworth is willing to put a lot of money on the table.

“Goncalo Ramos could be one of the targets of Newcastle,” Sepulveda told Sky Sports.

“Newcastle follows the striker of Benfica for a long time.”

He then adds: “I have the information that Newcastle is going to do an official offer above €30million for Goncalo Ramos in the next days. We have to wait and see if Benfica will accept it or not.”

Eddie Howe has seen Ramos up close this summer

Newcastle have been looking for possible signings all over the world this summer, but Eddie Howe saw Ramos up close last month.

The Magpies faced Benfica at the Estadio da Luz, with the home side winning 3-2. They went ahead in the first half, thanks to a goal from the man Newcastle could be bidding for.

A corner was swung in and Ramos outjumped captain Jamaal Lascelles to head home the opening goal of the game. It wasn’t a great moment for the Toon defender, who should have dealt with the set piece.

But it was an example of Ramos’ talents, and we could be seeing more of him very soon. That depends on whether or not Benfica accept our incoming offer.

A fee of £25million is set to be proposed for a man who scored eight goals in all competitions last season, and who is prolific for Portugal at youth level. He’s played for their Under-21s 18 times and scored 14 goals.

That’s an impressive record, and hopefully one that can be translated to the Premier League.

Howe must have been impressed with Ramos when we were in Portugal last month, and it could reportedly result in an official bid from Newcastle.
