Newcastle United star Fabian Schar is reportedly closing in on signing a new contract at St. James’ Park.

TEAMtalk have reported this morning that the Switzerland international is now finalising a new contract that will keep him at the club long-term.

As things currently stand, Schar can leave the club as a free agent at the end of the current season.

But it seems, after some brilliant performances since the turn of the year, Schar is ready to prolong his stay in the north east.

Apparently the 30-year-old is set to turn down a number of offers from clubs abroad.

TEAMtalk claim there has been interest from clubs in France, Germany and Turkey.

Lille, Borussia Monchengladbach and Galatasaray are said to have been keen to snap him up.

The reports adds that it is likely to be a two-year deal he signs.

That would see Schar remain on Tyneside until he turned 32.

It really has been a great turnaround for the former Deportivo La Coruna star over the past few months.

He was struggling, as were most of his teammates, earlier in the season under Steve Bruce.

But he has really knuckled down, and has struck up a good understanding with January signing Dan Burn.

Together, they have been keeping club captain Jamaal Lascelles out of the side.

The right call for Newcastle to give Fabian Schar a new contract

It is definitely good news that Schar appears to be close to signing a new deal at Newcastle.

Obviously, the club will be splashing the cash this summer and new centre-halves will likely be on the agenda.

But Schar, whom Eddie Howe branded ‘a fantastic footballer’ earlier this year, has reminded people over these last few months that he is a quality player.

It’s important for Newcastle officials to retain the club’s better players. Rather than just allow them to leave on free transfers, or indeed sell them.
