Newcastle United are continuing to be linked with a move for Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but there’s a problem.
The Magpies are on the lookout for a new striker to compete with Callum Wilson, who has spent most of 2022 out injured.
He returned at the end of the season, and his performances proved he can be Newcastle’s main man up top. The main issue is that there’s no guarantee he’ll stay fit, with the 30-year-old boasting a worrying fitness record.
And with Chris Wood struggling for goals since his £25million move, Eddie Howe is being forced to search for a new goalscorer.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin might be that man, but a deal won’t be easy.
Everton don’t want to sell Calvert-Lewin to a club like Newcastle
According to the Telegraph, Everton are unwilling to sell the 25-year-old to a direct rival. Apparently Newcastle fall into that bracket despite finishing well ahead of Frank Lampard’s side last season and boasting a much brighter future…
A move from Goodison to St James’ Park might be seen as a sideways move, but Calvert-Lewin is a player who perhaps needs a fresh start.

He didn’t enjoy a great season with Everton last time out, spending most of the campaign injured. He scored just five goals, which was a disappointing tally after a season best of 16 in 2020/21.
But that hasn’t put Newcastle off, and the Telegraph report that the Magpies are expected to make a bid. The same thing was said in May, when the Telegraph claimed DCL was one of Newcastle’s ‘priority targets’.
The report adds that Newcastle hope a bid for the striker leads to him asking to join Howe’s side.
This appears to be a difficult deal from a financial perspective. The fact he’s English means he’ll always cost a bit more, while Newcastle’s newfound wealth will also see the asking price increase.

Meanwhile, Everton need to recoup some money from player sales to help boost their squad, amid financial fair play problems.
Is selling Calvert-Lewin worth it to rebuild Lampard’s squad elsewhere? It depends on the price.
Right now, however, Newcastle are going to have to put a serious offer on the table to help convince Everton and Calvert-Lewin that this is the right move.
