Burnley are reportedly making moves to stop Newcastle signing Ben Mee in January.
The Clarets captain has been linked with the Magpies, as Eddie Howe looks to tighten up his defence.
Newcastle desperately need at least one new centre-back, and they’ve been linked with plenty. Two targets come from Turf Moor, with Newcastle also looking at James Tarkowski according to reports.
Both players are coming to the end of their Burnley contracts, meaning the January window is the last chance for Burnley to cash in.
It has already been reported that Tarkowski doesn’t plan to extend his contract, but Burnley seem happy to lose him for nothing rather than sell him to a rival.
But what does the future hold for Mee?
Burnley looking to extend Ben Mee contract
According to the Daily Mail, Burnley have started negotiations with Mee over a new deal.
The 32-year-old’s situation at Turf Moor isn’t as precarious as Tarkowski. Mee has an option for another 12 months in his current contract.
However, Burnley will be keen to give him a longer deal and thwart any interest from Newcastle.
While Tarkowski is an exciting target for Newcastle, Mee was a strange rumour. It has been reported that PIF are prepared to double Mee’s wages, which currently stand at £50,000.
Given his age, it seems like Mee is a short-term target as the club look for players for the here and now. Premier League survival is pivotal, and right now we don’t have a squad that is up to the task.
While at 32 Mee doesn’t have too many years left in him at the top, he would certainly be a decent addition for six months.
But ideally we can get someone with a bit more longevity. Ideally we can get Tarkowski.
However, Burnley reportedly don’t want to sell to a relegation rival, and now they’re making a move to ensure Mee doesn’t head to St James’ Park either.
