It looks like Newcastle United won’t be signing Jesse Lingard in January.

The Manchester United midfielder has been heavily linked with the Magpies since the takeover went through. There was even a claim from The Times that he was Newcastle’s number one target and they planned to make him the club’s best paid player.

But it seems that won’t be the case.

According to the Athletic, Lingard plans to stay at Manchester United for the rest of the season. The report adds that Newcastle don’t plan to make a move for him in January.

Given the England international’s contract situation, it felt likely that he would leave Old Trafford when the transfer window opens. But instead, the Athletic believe Lingard will stay to fight for his place at Manchester United.

It’s a big call by Lingard, who will have ambitions of going to the 2022 World Cup with England. Sitting on Man United’s bench certainly isn’t going to help matters.

Jesse Lingard transfer update is a big blow for Newcastle

The 29-year-old felt like he would be a perfect addition for PIF and Newcastle. He’s extremely talented and has that vital Premier League experience that we need.

He was sensational for West Ham on loan last season, and a similar impact at St James’ Park likely would have guaranteed top flight survival.

Therefore, the club’s plan not to pursue Lingard is extremely disappointing.

Perhaps Amanda Staveley and co will look at him again in the summer, especially if his fails to sign a new contract with Man United and becomes a free agent.

For now, Newcastle will switch their attentions elsewhere as they look to secure some big signings in January. Lord knows we need them.
