Newcastle transfer news: Alan Shearer tips Harry Kane move

The world appears to be waiting for Newcastle United to make a marquee signing.

Under PIF, the club’s recruitment has tended to focus on bringing players in their mid-20s to Newcastle in the view that they can grow together.

Clearly, most of them have hit the ground running, so there is little need to change that policy.

Still, qualification for Champions League football would make things interesting. While we can hardly expect those in charge to rip up what’s been working so well thus far, surely Eddie Howe will be looking for a touch more experience.

That brings us to Harry Kane.

The England captain is consistently linked with a move away from a Tottenham team in disarray. Though Manchester United and Chelsea are more frequently touted as landing spots for the 29-year-old, Newcastle have also been mentioned.

Alan Shearer jokes Harry Kane could join Newcastle

Indeed, Kane is believed to want to win trophies.

Though Newcastle are not yet ready to challenge for the Premier League or the Champions League, the rapid-fire progress they are making under Howe hardly makes the idea of doing so over the next few years a particularly far-fetched idea.

So much so that Alan Shearer has joked Kane could break his Premier League goalscoring record in a Newcastle shirt.

The Spurs forward bagged his 208th League goal on Sunday to move within 52 of equaling Shearer’s haul of 260.

Gary Lineker warned his BBC colleague that Kane was coming for his record, to which Shearer joked: “But will he break it in a Newcastle shirt or a Man Utd shirt!!?”

Kane to Newcastle is not as ridiculous as it first sounded

We’re getting to the point now that the idea of seeing Kane clad in black and white is not as crazy at it sounds.

Do Manchester United or Chelsea really provide more in the way of guarantees for trophies? Granted, the former beat Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final but hardly look as convincing as in years gone by. The Blues, meanwhile, seem to be in a constant state of flux.

Reportedly on wages of around £200k-per-week and coming towards the end of his contract at Spurs, Kane doesn’t look as out of reach as he did only a few months ago.
