Newcastle United’s deal to sign Bruno Guimaraes is heading in the right direction.
After talk intensified on Wednesday, the Magpies reportedly agreed a fee with Lyon on Thursday night. According to the Northern Echo, the 24-year-old will cost £35million. There could also be £8million in bonuses if certain conditions are met.
It’s a blockbuster deal for Newcastle, but one that isn’t over the line yet. There are still a couple of hurdles to overcome to ensure he becomes a Toon player.

In an update on Twitter, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has highlighted two things that need to happen before Guimaraes can sign on the dotted line.
Newcastle staff arrive in Brazil as Bruno Guimaraes deal edges closer
According to Romano, a Newcastle staff member has arrived in Belo Horizonte in Brazil to conduct Guimaraes’ medical. The centre-midfielder is currently in Brazil representing his country.
They played last night, drawing 1-1 with Ecuador. However, Guimaraes was an unused substitute.
The medical should be no bother, but it’s obviously still a requirement.
The other hurdle to overcome is an agent fee. Romano states that it is ‘yet to be agreed’. Again, that also shouldn’t be an issue.
The player is keen, and the two clubs have agreed a fee. Arranging how much his representatives are paid appears to be the last major step that is preventing this deal going through.

But it’s hard to imagine proceedings getting this far, only for it to collapse due to an agent fee.
While it isn’t done yet, it’s looking very likely that Bruno Guimaraes will be a Newcastle United player before the transfer window closes.
Of all the signings we’ve made so far this month, this looks like the most exciting. Guimaraes should transform our midfield, and hopefully drag us towards Premier League survival.
