Newcastle United have been told that they may have to sell one of their key players of the last few years this summer if they want to progress.

Newcastle’s long-term aims are to compete with the very best in football, but the financial restrictions in the Premier League are making it very difficult for their owners to really flex their muscles in the transfer market.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Tony Cascarino suggested that Newcastle may be forced to sell Callum Wilson in the summer to raise funds and progress the squad for their long-term goals.

Newcastle forced to sell some big players this summer

Previous reports have suggested that Newcastle may have to move on one of their star players like a Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak or Sven Botman to have any room to manoeuvre in the upcoming window.

However, that is something they would like to avoid at all costs as it would prove to be a significant step backwards in terms of their long-term ambitions and would not represent the type of club they hope to be.

Instead, Newcastle could be looking at selling other first-team names who have perhaps served their purpose well and who could be moved on without having a huge impact on the quality in the squad.

Wilson has already been linked with a move away in January and has less than 18 months on his current deal, so it would make the most sense to cash in on him while they still have the chance.

As Cascarino suggests, the very best clubs in Europe have to be ruthless and can’t afford sentimentality, and that’s what Newcastle must learn.

On Wilson, Cascarino said: “Sometimes you just have to move people on. That’s what Liverpool did with Jordan Henderson, James Milner. They get to a certain stage and even though they love them they still move them on.

“I think Newcastle might have to do similar things. I really like Callum Wilson, he’s really good and always reliable, but I would probably move on from him in the summer.”

Wilson has served his purpose on Tyneside

For a few years now, despite his terrible injury record, Wilson has been a key player for Newcastle with his impressive goal record of averaging around one goal every other game.

In the couple of years prior to the takeover, the striker was very important to keeping Newcastle afloat under Steve Bruce, but now it seems as though his time is up at the club, even if he’s still a reliable goalscorer.

To be the best Newcastle must learn from the best, and the likes of Man City have shown in the past they are not afraid to move someone on, even if they are still good enough to play, to bring the next player through.

Look at Ilkay Gundogan for example, still a player with huge quality and yet they weren’t afraid to lose him to Barcelona, and that’s the kind of ruthlessness Newcastle need to learn.
