Newcastle target Martin Terrier suffers horrendous knee injury

Newcastle United have been linked with signing Martin Terrier in January, but now the forward is set to be out long term with a knee injury.

The Frenchman has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in 2023, with his form for Rennes attracting a lot of attention from English shores. He has been excellent in Ligue 1 this season, scoring nine goals and providing four assists in 16 games.

That is why the likes of Newcastle have been watching Terrier, with 90min claiming in November that Eddie Howe’s side are interested in signing him. They were also keen in the summer, but he signed a new contract with Rennes instead.

A move away seemed to be on the cards this year, and he would have been a great addition to the Magpies’ attack. Bringing him in certainly would boost our chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

However, a move to St James’ Park is not on the cards – nor is a move anywhere else for that matter.

Martin Terrier’s knee injury rules out transfer

Rennes took on Nice on Monday night, winning their first game of the New Year 2-1. Terrier scored the opening goal of the game, but his evening ended in disaster.

The 25-year-old was forced off after 34 minutes, stretchered out of the game due to a serious knee injury.

After the game, L’Equipe reported that he could now be out of action for eight months. They state that he has injured his cruciate ligaments and his meniscus. It is a horror injury for a player who has been in red hot form this season.

It is a horrendous start to the year for Terrier, who definitely won’t get a transfer in January, and could also miss out in the summer depending on his rehab.

Newcastle are in the market for a wide forward this month, and Terrier certainly ticks a lot of boxes. But now the forward, who briefly played alongside Bruno Guimaraes at Lyon, is going to be out of action for a long time, and definitely isn’t on his way to Tyneside.

His season is over, but hopefully he is able to recover and get back to full fitness in time for the next campaign.

As for Newcastle, they will have to scratch his name off of the transfer shortlist. It is set to be an intriguing January for the Magpies, who are also in the market for a centre midfielder and a young right-back.
