Newcastle target Eze could make Saint-Maximin even better – opinion

Newcastle United are reportedly confident about signing Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace this summer.

That’s according to the Sun, who claim the Magpies are willing to pay £45million for the attacking midfielder. They also state that Eddie Howe’s side failed with a loan move for Eze last month.

While this story seems somewhat strange, there’s no hiding the fact it would be incredibly exciting to see the 23-year-old in a black and white shirt.

Eze was sensational for Palace last season, providing 10 goal contributions in his debut Premier League campaign.

He’s had less impact this season, only featuring five times in the top flight after rupturing his Achilles tendon back in May last year.

Despite not returning to his best just yet, he would be a very welcome addition at St James’ Park, and could help a current Newcastle star do even better.

Ever since he joined Newcastle in 2019, Allan Saint-Maximin has been a fan favourite. At times, he’s carried the club on his back.

There have been plenty of games where the plan was ‘give the ball to Maxi and pray’. And he’s delivered more often than he has any right to.

The Frenchman is having a wonderful season, his most productive to date in a Toon shirt. He currently has five goals and five assists in the Premier League.

However, there have been moments in recent weeks where he has been guilty of holding on to possession. There’s been a desire to do things on his own, rather than trust his teammates.

Saint-Maximin seems like a player who would be even better with better players around him – similar to Sadio Mane when he made the move from Southampton to Liverpool.

And knowing how well he works with Wilfried Zaha at Palace, Eze could have a similar impact alongside Saint-Maximin. Both players are incredibly skilful and gifted, producing moments of magic out of nothing. Together they could be a real force.

Better attacking players will help Saint-Maximin hit an even higher level, which is why talk of a summer move for Eze is incredibly exciting.
