Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson has never missed a penalty for the club since he joined. He’s netted five times from the spot for the Magpies against the likes of Hugo Lloris, ex-Magpie Tim Krul and Nick Pope.
Wilson admitted on the ‘Footballer’s Football Podcast‘ that he has a routine every time he steps up to the penalty spot.
“It’s all about mindset,” he stated. “The only times I’ve missed a penalty is when my routine is changed.
“I’ll do the same thing every time I take a penalty. The same amount of steps and I’ll choose my spot the day before, regardless of anything that happens on the day. So I know where I’m going, I’ve done my research on the goalie.
“It’s all about controlling the nerves and the emotion in that feeling.”
Whenever the Magpies’ number nine steps up from twelve yards, some fans feel a little more at ease. He’s definitely one of their best penalty takers in recent times.

Wilson’s mindset shows why he’s been such a good striker for Newcastle, but they’ve coped without him
Since December, Callum Wilson has been injured when he went off in the first half against Manchester United. It was a huge blow as he was a key contributor for Newcastle.
However, the Magpies went on a long run undefeated run of nine games without him. Chris Wood was signed in January from Burnley to provide another option up front. But while he offers good holdup play, he’s struggled to score consistently.
Hopefully the host of the ‘Footballer’s Football Podcast’ can return before the season ends. Just imagine how good the Toon could be with Wilson back in the side, as well as Kieran Trippier who is also injured.

Wilson won’t be back for the clash with Liverpool tomorrow, the same goes for Trippier. But Newcastle will be feeling confident against one of the Premier League’s title contenders.
The Newcastle vs Liverpool clash will be a test of how far they’ve come. Only the Reds have more points than the Toon in 2022.
It could be argued that they don’t have much to play for with safety pretty much secured. But they’re currently in 9th place, so they’ll want to finish the season somewhere in the top ten.
