Newcastle still have a bigger transfer target in mind than Ruben Neves

Newcastle United could be set to move for a new midfielder in January.

While the club moved to strengthen that position over the course of the summer, Sandro Tonali’s ten-month ban from football has obviously complicated matters.

As such, midfield is believed to be a priority position for Newcastle heading into the opening of the transfer window in just a few weeks’ time.

Indeed, a number of big names have already been linked.

Ruben Neves of Al-Hilal has been touted for a Premier League return, while Kalvin Phillips of Manchester City has also been frequently linked.

Now, some insight into Newcastle’s preference has emerged.

Newcastle transfer news: Kalvin Phillips and Ruben Neves latest

According to the Daily Telegraph’s Luke Edwards on X, Newcastle have not yet decided on a defined No.1 target for their midfield.

Still, Neves is but a name on a shortlist and the club have not discussed signing anyone from the Saudi Pro League.

As it stands, Phillips is understood to be the preferred option.

Kalvin Phillips: Newcastle make wise transfer decision

Though both players boast Premier League experience, Phillips would surely be a better use of funds.

Neves, after all, is now said to be happy out in Saudi and, clearly, won’t have been playing at the kind of level the Premier League demands. That’s not to say he wouldn’t get back up to speed of course given his experience but Phillips looks ready to hit the ground running.

A specialist No.6 already known to the likes of Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson and someone with a point to prove ahead of Euro 2024, he’s a sensible target for a mid-season transfer window.

Seemingly ready to leave City after struggling for minutes following his move from Leeds, it could be a deal that works for all parties.
