Joe Willock scored his third goal of the season against Manchester United on Sunday, and the Newcastle midfielder believes that more are on the horizon.

Newcastle beat Man United 2-0 at St James’ Park, with Eddie Howe‘s side absolutely battering the Red Devils. It should have been more than two, in all honesty.

Willock was one of the stars of the show, and his performance has led to renewed calls for him to play for England. The 23-year-old has never won a cap for his country, but a debut callup is surely on the horizon. He is playing brilliantly, and deserves a chance on the international stage.

That is something Willock is dreaming of, and he believes he has what it takes to thrive in an England shirt.

Joe Willock dreams of England

After the win against Manchester United, Willock was asked about potentially playing for his country by the Northern Echo.

“Yes, of course, that’s my dream,” Willock said.

“I want to add more goals and assists to my game, and I feel like it will come. If I keep chipping away in training and working hard, I feel like it will definitely come.

“I’m a unique midfielder and I’ve got all the attributes to definitely play at the highest level, which is obviously playing for your country.”

Keep playing well for Newcastle

Willock absolutely deserves to play for England. His form this season has been exceptional, and he is now a much more complete midfielder than the one that first arrived at Newcastle.

That debut campaign was outrageous, with the loanee scoring eight goals in 14 games. That earned him a permanent £25million move to St James’ Park, and he has since become a more rounded player.

While his goal contributions are not as high, he influences the game in other ways. And he is hoping to provide more goals and assists.

He current has seven goal contributions this season, and has 11 games left to get more. He is certainly getting in the right position, having missed a couple of sitters on Sunday.

Willock is right when he describes himself as unique. He can do a bit of everything, but he does it in an unassuming way that you sometimes fail to spot just how good he is.

Hopefully Gareth Southgate is paying close attention, because Willock absolutely deserves an England callup. But for Toon fans, the main thing will be for him to keep playing well to guide us into the Champions League.
