Joe Willock was Newcastle United’s hero against Manchester United on Sunday, but he left teammates Alexander Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin in shock for the wrong reasons.

The midfielder opened the scoring for Newcastle, netting a close range header after some glorious link up play from Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Saint-Maximin.

It was exactly what the Magpies deserved, having completely dominated against Man United. Eddie Howe’s side were rampant, and should have taken the lead much earlier.

Newcastle created plenty of chances in the first half, but just could not find a way past David De Gea.

Joe Willock shocks Toon players with first half miss

Two big chances in the first half fell to Willock. The first was a rebound after De Gea saved Isak’s header. The Spaniard palmed it back into the path of the midfielder, who could not direct his reactionary shot in. Instead, it was well saved by the Man United goalkeeper.

But while that miss was unfortunate, the next was somewhat wayward.

Isak and Saint-Maximin combined brilliantly on the break in the 40th minute, with the Frenchman driving at the Man United defence. He then pulled a clever reverse ball across the face of goal and into the path of the onrushing Joe Willock.

It was perfectly weighted for him to break the deadlock, but instead the 23-year-old blazed his effort over. He was leaning back slightly, much to the relief of the Red Devils and the despair of Newcastle.

Isak and Saint-Maximin could not hide their emotions. Isak immediately flopped to the deck in shock, while Saint-Maximin dropped to his knees. They could not believe that their teammate did not score.

Luckily, Willock was able to rally in the second half and get the goal his performance deserved. Like so many Toon players on Sunday, he was absolutely outstanding, and marked his St James’ Park display with a crucial goal.

He admitted that he was ‘disappointed‘ not to score in the first half, and that feeling was shared by Isak, Saint-Maximin and everyone inside St James’ Park. But he responded to score when it mattered, and his efforts mean Newcastle are back in the top four.
