Beating Arsenal at home is becoming a habit for Newcastle United.

The Magpies won 1-0 against Arsenal on Saturday, as Eddie Howe’s side ended a run of five games without a win in the Premier League.

It was a massive victory against a Premier League giant, and a side that has aspirations of winning the title.

Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the game – a thumping header after a beautiful cross from Anthony Gordon.

It was a pretty straightforward win for Eddie Howe. Newcastle played so much better, showing the kind of qualities that helped them qualify for the Champions League.

There was no controversy surrounding the victory, unlike last season’s game at St James’ Park

Newcastle look back at ‘uncontroversial’ win over Arsenal

On November 2nd 2024, Newcastle United beat Arsenal 1-0 at St James’ Park.

And on November 4th 2023, Newcastle United also beat Arsenal 1-0 at St James’ Park.

But while the most recent win was straightforward, last year’s win was rather controversial.

Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the game, with VAR looking at three different reasons to disallow the goal. There was a possibility the ball was out in the build up, a potential foul and a possible offside, all of which seemingly pointed towards the goal being ruled out.

However, VAR determined that the goal should be given, enraging the Arsenal faithful to the point that they still go on about it.

Mikel Arteta was fuming at the time, branding it a ‘disgrace’.

And on the anniversary of that win, Newcastle United’s social media team have poked fun at the Gunners.

Alongside a video of Gordon’s goal, they posted: “On this day last year @anthonygordon was on target in a fairly uncontroversial victory at St. James’ Park!”

Mikel Arteta endured another unhappy visit to St James’ Park

That game last season enraged everyone associated with Arsenal Football Club. The reaction was quite staggering, in truth.

But this time they could have no such complaints. There was even a hilarious moment when an Anthony Gordon cross travelled all the way across the box, only to stay in by hitting the corner flag.

While there was no controversy on Saturday, Arteta was still not happy. The Arsenal manager exchanged words with Jason Tindall during the game, while he made an interesting comment during his post-match press conference.

Arteta aimed a compliment that was actually more of a dig at Newcastle, stating that the Magpies are ‘really good at what they want to do’.

Newcastle stopped Arsenal doing what they want to do, as they continued their recent rotten record at St James’ Park. That is three defeats from their last four visits to Tyneside.
