Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali featured for Italy yesterday evening as they were held to a 1-1 draw with North Macedonia, leaving their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2024 in slight doubt.
The Italians took the lead through Ciro Immobile early in the second half, but they were pegged back in the 81st minute when Enis Bardhi equalised for the hosts.
Tonali played the majority of the fixture, only being subbed off in the 89th minute whilst on a yellow card.
Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, the Magpies midfielder shared his disappointment following the draw.
“It is not what we hoped for, not the result we wanted to take back home,” said Tonali.
“Disappointment is natural.
“Just as it is right that North Macedonia celebrate their result.
“This is football, every game is difficult at international level.
“Now we need to get back on track because in a few days there is another important match.
“We need to get back to being Italy.
“We controlled the game well and had numerous chances.
“However, we were unable to deal with their reaction in the final 15 minutes.
“It is a pity, as we allowed them very few opportunities, but it was enough to pay for it with a draw.”

Tonali’s Italy face off against Ukraine on Tuesday night who are bound to be feeling confident following their 1-1 draw with England. It is a crucial match for the Italians who are currently three points behind Ukraine, a victory would place them second behind the Three Lions whereas defeat could see them drop as low as fourth, six points behind second spot if North Macedonia avoid defeat against Malta.
It would be a disaster for Italy if they were not to qualify considering that they are the current holders, so all eyes will be on their fixture at the San Siro in a couple of nights.
Tonali is expected to be in from the off, fingers crossed it goes well for him.
