Newcastle now look set to receive fresh warning from Everton as January transfer window troubles continue

As we approach the halfway stage, the January transfer window has proven to be very frustrating for Newcastle United.

Given the club’s injury worries, there was hope that multiple new faces would arrive at St James’ Park. There was talk of a goalkeeper, a midfielder and an attacker joining the club, but that is yet to happen.

Instead, all the talk has been about financial fair play, or profit and sustainability rules as they are now known. Newcastle officials are extremely worried about overstepping the mark and being penalised in the future, while there is plenty of talk about the Magpies having to sell before they buy.

Big names like Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak are being talked up as candidates to be sold – major assets who the club have invested heavily in. Selling them would give Newcastle the financial freedom they are craving, but it would also mean losing elite footballers who would be extremely difficult to replace.

It is a challenging situation for Newcastle, at a time when they need reinforcements.

Whether or not they arrive remains to be seen, but the Toon owners looks set to receive a fresh reminder of why they are so concerned about breaching the Premier League‘s profit and sustainability rules.

Everton and Nottingham Forest expected to be found in breach of PSR as Newcastle watch on

According to the Athletic, both Everton and Nottingham Forest are expected to be found in breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. They are reportedly set to discover their fate today (Monday, January 15th).

If they are found in breach, they will be investigated by an independent commission. That could then lead to a fine or a points deduction.

Everton have already suffered one this season, being docked 10 points to leave them battling for survival. They are currently 17th in the league, but would be as high as 12th had it not been for the deduction. In fact, they would only be two points behind Newcastle.

As for Forest, their treatment seems harsh considering they have only just returned to the Premier League. They invested heavily in their squad during the summer of 2022, as they looked to bridge the ginormous gap from the Championship to the top flight. Now their could be consequences.

There is a lot of disgruntlement throughout the Premier League about profit and sustainability right now, including from Newcastle.

It is holding the Magpies back, but breaching it could have seriously damaging consequences.
