Newcastle can still sign 18-year-old ‘monster’, despite rumoured agreement with PL rival – journalist

Newcastle United are still in the running to sign Vasco da Gama wonderkid Andrey Santos, despite claims Chelsea were expected to win the £12m race.

That’s according to SBT journalist Lucas Pedrosa, who believes reports of an agreed Stamford Bridge move are wide of the mark.

The Evening Standard claimed the Blues were advanced in talks over a deal, and were thus expected to complete the signing of the 18-year-old.

However, Goal Brasil argued against this, asserting that the west London club were not as far along in talks as previously reported – meaning the Magpies still had a chance of securing his services.

Pedrosa has now shared further light on the situation. He revealed that Santos ‘is not negotiating and was not negotiated with any club of European football’. Instead, he says the youngster is fully focused on having a strong season Vasco da Gama in 2023.

Despite rumours of the Toon’s interest and Chelsea nearing an agreement, the journalist claims there’s ‘absolutely nothing in that sense’ at this time.

Therefore, whilst it looked like Eddie Howe’s side had lost the race to the midfielder, it now appears they are no further behind than their Premier League rivals.

Newcastle still in the race for Santos

This will come as a major boost in Newcastle’s pursuit of the youngster, with the 18-year-old deemed an exciting prospect in world football.

In 33 Serie B games last season, Santos netted eight goals from a more defensive midfield position.

Having impressed in the middle of the park for Vasco da Gama, Brazilian legend Juninho claimed the teenager is already a ‘monster’, hailing his potential to reach the very top.

Therefore, with such undeniable talent, it was little surprise to see Chelsea join the Magpies in a battle for the player’s signature.

Given their heavyweight status in the Premier League, it was always going to be difficult to lure the youngster to Tyneside.

However, given the news that the London outfit are yet to enter negotiations with the Brazilian club, Newcastle still have a strong chance of landing Santos at St James’ Park.
