Newcastle must not sell Chris Wood this summer

Of the five players Newcastle United signed in January, Chris Wood has been the biggest disappointment.

However, that says more about how well the other four signings have done, rather than how poorly the Kiwi striker has performed.

Wood was the first sizeable investment made by the new owners. They activated his £25million release clause to bring him to St James’ Park from Burnley.

On the face of it, he hasn’t been worth it. He’s scored just twice for the Magpies, and needs five goals from the remaining six games this season to hit his customary double figures.

That doesn’t look likely, but the numbers only tell half the story.

With speculation that Newcastle are in the market for a new striker and some fans pondering what the future holds for Wood, the 30-year-old has to remain at St James’ Park beyond this season.

Selling Chris Wood would be a huge mistake by Newcastle

Right now, Wood is the main striker at the club. Callum Wilson is injured, while Dwight Gayle is severely out of favour. The latter feels likely to leave this summer.

But with Wilson edging closer to a return and Newcastle looking to sign another forward, Wood could start next season as third choice.

However, that’s exactly why we must keep him. We’ve seen this season why we need multiple options up top. Newcastle have three strikers, but the third choice isn’t deemed good enough to feature regularly.

But Wood would be a much more accomplished third choice. He offers something different, and allows Newcastle to mix their game up with his physicality.

Eddie Howe has often played with two strikers during his managerial career, which is something he might move towards with the Magpies. If he does do that, it will increase Wood’s importance in the squad.

Wood has worked tirelessly since his arrival at St James’ Park. He’s brought more than just goals. He’s defended from the front, and got more out of the players around him.

Yes, he could score more. But he’s a valuable member of the squad who should remain in a black and white shirt next season.

Luckily, that appears likely to be the case with the Athletic reporting he is ‘100%’ going nowhere this summer.
