Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has said he would be keen to sign a new contract at St. James’ Park.

As things currently stand, the 24-year-old will leave at the end of the season as a free agent.

Opportunities this term have been few and far between for Longstaff.

The star did actually begin the campaign as one of Newcastle’s better performers, but he fell away as the going got very tough towards the end of Steve Bruce’s reign.

And since Eddie Howe came in, Longstaff has been on the fringes. He’s only started four times under the ex-Bournemouth manager.

The new manager has preferred to use the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock and Joelinton as a three.

And obviously Bruno Guimaraes has come in and looked a class act whenever he’s taken to the field.

Despite the level of competition, Longstaff – who has been tracked by Everton – is keen to agree fresh terms with his boyhood club.

He told broadcaster Andy Sixsmith (Chronicle): “I’m from 15 mins down the road – the family are season-ticket holders. Why wouldn’t I want to be a part of a powerhouse in world football in the future? I’m focused on being the best player I can be – and hopefully that’s here.

“To play for Newcastle United as a fan… we always say if we’re retired, we’ll come back to St James’ and it’ll be Champions League nights and games to win titles. We’re the first building block in that.”

Sean Longstaff should get new contract at Newcastle

It has been a hard season for Longstaff, but Newcastle ought to get him signed up to a new contract.

We’ve seen how good he can be, and it would be a real shame to see him flourishing at a club that isn’t Newcastle.

Newcastle will overhaul their squad over the coming transfer windows. But it would be nice to see an academy graduate sticking around.

He obviously doesn’t have a divine right to be in that dressing room just because he came through the youth ranks. But he is someone that gets the club, the culture and the fans, as well as being a player with a lot of talent.

Hopefully player and club can soon come to an agreement.
