Apparently Newcastle United target Mario Lemina is too old at 27.

However, they have no problem bidding for 28-year-old Rafa Silva.

Two separate transfer reports that totally contradict each other – so which one is closer to the truth?

While Newcastle are seemingly nowhere near making their first major signing of the summer, silly season continues to run wild at St James’ Park.

According to the Chronicle, Steve Bruce hopes to make his first signing before the club’s first pre-season game on July 18th.

The Magpies have signed three teenagers, adding Remi Savage, Cameron Ferguson and Charlie Wiggett to the Under-23 squad.

But when it comes to first-team additions, speculation is few and bar between outside of the usual paper talk.

Nothing is clear at Newcastle this summer. We’ve had different alleged transfer budgets reported. There’s been speculation that the club will be limited to loans and free agents.

In reality, who knows what is going on? With how silent the club have been lately, it would be a surprise if Bruce actually knew.

Of course, fans shouldn’t expect to know every literally minor detail of the club’s strategy. We don’t need to know what Lee Charnley had for breakfast or what Mike Ashley is watching on Netflix.

But you can normally get a good idea of where things are going from the speculation coming out in the press. But other than the fact we want a centre back and Joe Willock, is anything else really clear?

Is Mario Lemina really too old for Newcastle?

The Daily Mail recently reported that Newcastle want to sign Lemina from Southampton.

It was first stated that the Magpies only wanted to pay £5million, yet less than 24 hours later the same reporter said Southampton valued Lemina at £4million.

And, suddenly, £4million was too much for Newcastle, as Ashley doesn’t want to pay cash for a player as old as 27.

That sounds wrong on so many levels. But a report from Portugal makes things even more confusing.

According to Correio da Manha, Newcastle are preparing to make an offer for Rafa Silva, who is reportedly valued at more than £20million.

For reference, Rafa Silva is 28-years-old. He’s older than Mario Lemina, who Newcastle allegedly don’t want to pay for because of his age.

So who’s telling the truth?

The Daily Mail’s report about Lemina seems completely wide of the mark. But with the takeover saga hindering Newcastle in the transfer window, it seems highly unlikely we’re readying a huge bid for a player like Rafa Silva.

As always, we wait until the club confirm anything and a new player is pictured holding a scarf above his head.

Then again, with the way the Magpies are communicating this summer, we probably won’t even get that…
