Last week The Athletic reported that Isaac Hayden will miss around two months after having knee surgery. The English midfielder joins the likes of Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin and Jamal Lewis on the injury list.
Hayden’s last appearance for the Magpies came in the 4-0 loss to Manchester City at home. He was replaced by Sean Longstaff in the 61st minute and was ruled out of the clash against Manchester United due to the injury.
It will be a blow for the Toon Army, Hayden, 26, puts his body on the line each time he steps onto the pitch. Furthermore, he’s the only proper holding midfielder at the club, making him even more of a miss.

Howe thanks Hayden for playing on with knee problem
In his recent press conference Newcastle boss, Eddie Howe spoke on Hayden’s injury. Apparently, the midfielder’s injury has been bothering him for longer than we knew.
Lee Ryder of The Chronicle reported that Howe commented, “I want to go on record to thank him for playing on.”
It’s possible that playing over the busy Christmas period could’ve made the injury worse. If Hayden had been allowed to rest sooner rather than later, the injury could’ve been less serious.

The ever-growing injury list will give new owners even more incentive to spend
Newcastle has kicked off the January transfer window in a very big way. They’ve brought in Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid on a two and a half year deal.
The Athletic reports that the Magpies are also looking at bringing in Sven Botman from Lille with a newly improved bid. It would certainly increase the already high levels of excitement on Tyneside if they were to acquire the defender.
With now no fit holding midfielders, Newcastle need to bring one in before the window shuts. Boubacar Kamara was was linked last summer and a name some Newcastle fans still want to see him arrive.

The injury to Hayden is such a blow for Newcastle. There are no other midfielders in the squad who effectively play the holding midfield role as well as him.
With the arrival of Trippier and other exciting links, the owners will know they need to acquire another player in that position. The names linked with the Magpies sound very exciting, so you’d trust the owners to get in right when they pursue a holding midfielder.
