Michael Edwards is leaving Liverpool, but it seems he won’t be joining Eddie Howe at St. James’ Park.

Liverpool’s sporting director has announced he is leaving his role at the club.

Edwards has been at Anfield for 10 years, and has helped the club to become a force in English football once again.

He has been a huge influence behind the scenes, working to bring quality players into the club while shipping others out for impressively large fees.

Edwards has penned an open letter to Reds supporters about his impending exit on the club’s official website.

In it, he says that he always intended to cap his time at the club at 10 years.

He states that he believes clubs and individuals must eventually move on in order to evolve.

Edwards says that he will remain with Liverpool until the end of the season, which perhaps rules out a move to Newcastle.

It has been reported in recent days that Eddie Howe was keen to reunite with Edwards at St. James’ Park. The pair previously worked together at Portsmouth.

Howe was actually been asked about Edwards in his press conference earlier, to which he responded (via Miles Starforth): “As far as I know, absolutely not – I know nothing about Michael Edwards’ future.”

Newcastle need a director of football right now though, ahead of the January transfer window.

The likes of Michael Emenalo and Edwin van der Sar are the latest names to be mentioned.

Edwards to Newcastle dead in the water

In his letter, Edwards stops short of saying what he’ll do in the future.

But it seems fairly safe to say he won’t be joining Howe at Newcastle. The new manager’s comments are pretty definitive.

Newcastle couldn’t afford to wait for Edwards and go through the rest of the current season without a director of football.

They need someone in place now, so they can begin work ahead of the next transfer window.
