Newcastle United transfer target Darwin Nunez was on target once again last night, this time against Liverpool.

The Benfica striker found the net in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final clash, which the Reds won 3-1.

Nunez was the main focus for many people last night.

The 22-year-old has been banging in the goals over in Portugal, and is without doubt one of world football’s best young prospects at the moment.

People were really keen to see how he’d fare against one of the best teams in England, and also Europe, in Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp branded him ‘a top boy’ ahead of the clash (via Metro).

He was going up against one of the world’s best in Virgil van Dijk, and Ibrahima Konate.

Despite facing such tough opposition, Nunez managed to get himself on the scoresheet for the 28th time this season.

Rafa Silva burst away on the right wing and delivered a low cross into the box.

Konate probably ought to have cleared the ball, but Nunez showed good anticipation by pouncing on the loose ball.

He fired into the far bottom corner to get Benfica back to 2-1.

The star was unable to drag his team back into it, with Liverpool scoring late on through Luis Diaz.

Benfica will need Nunez to have one of the games of his life if they are to turn things around in the second leg.

Darwin Nunez would be an unbelievable coup by Newcastle

So Nunez has now scored against one of the best English teams.

He was not super-involved last night, but it’s clear he is a clinical goalscorer.

Newcastle – who have reportedly scouted him ‘extensively’ – face an uphill battle signing him. It’s very possible that he will only want to join a club in the Champions League.

But Newcastle obviously have a very exciting project, so maybe Nunez would be open to experiencing it.

The Magpies would be able to complete with other clubs financially, so a move should not be ruled out.
