Why some Newcastle fans think the latest takeover statement is a positive move

Should we see the latest Newcastle takeover statement as a positive thing or a negative thing?

Does it mean the arbitration is more likely to go our way? Or does it mean it’s likely to go against us?

In truth, no one knows. We won’t know until the hearing is completed and we know which way it has gone.

In fact, we may never know whether this statement has had any influence.

At the minute, Newcastle are fighting for the hearing to be held in public. That’s what the club want. They believe they have nothing to hide.

In their statement, the club said that the Premier League should have no problem with arbitration being made public if they have acted “lawfully and properly”.

When you focus on a comment like that, it feels like Newcastle are turning the screw against the Premier League. It feels like a power play.

However, some will argue that it reeks of desperation. Unsurprisingly, the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards is of that school of thought.

Incredible hypocrisy from Newcastle and Ashley

One thing that the statement certainly reeks of is hypocrisy.

The club are calling for transparency.

“Gone are the days when important decisions that affect clubs and their fans should be made secretly, behind closed doors and away from the public eye.”

That’s great lads, but while we’re on, do you have the retained list? Or what about the club accounts? Perhaps some news about the new kit supplier?

Mike Ashley is on the offensive. It’s what Newcastle fans want to see.

But that does not make him an ally. He is still the enemy. We still desperately need to see the back of him.

Lest we forget, he will benefit from this takeover too if it is eventually allowed to happen.

Some fans think the latest takeover statement is definitely a positive, simply because of Nick de Marco QC.

Along with Shaheed Fatima QC, De Marco has been tasked with handling the club’s arbitration hearing.

He is an immensely experienced QC, and has been involved in multiple high profile sport cases. Not only that, but he’s been on the winning side.

There’s no chance this statement wouldn’t have been put out without De Marco’s blessing.

Would he really sanction such a statement if he wasn’t feeling confident about the club’s chances?

That’s the view of some Toon fans on Twitter.
